The Swansons made their first entry into the stud business with the purchase of Sun Studs in Roseburg, Oregon in 2001. Now operating as Swanson Group Mfg. LLC, Roseburg Studmill, the company has rebuilt much of the operation. New kilns were added, the existing kilns updated and a new high speed planer was installed with the result that Swanson studs are among the most recognizable by builders on the West Coast.
The mill produces a variety of products and species. The most common species are Hem-Fir, White-Fir, Doug Fir and SPF. Studs are available in both Green and Kiln Dried although the bulk of production is dry. Studs are produced in 2 X 4 and 2 X 6 with trims up to 120'' in length and as short as 48''. The mill also produces 4 X 4 in all the same species as the studs.
The studs and timbers are all treated with anti-stain treatment, and the ends are stamped with a clear wax coating to add additional protection. Each unit is tagged with an inventory label. Bar coding of each stud is available but not standard.
In addition to studs the mill also produces Western Red and Incense Cedar. Most cedar is produced as 2 X 4 rails, 4 X 4 posts and 3 5/8 X 3 5/8 pencil stock.
